Terry Allen, Associate Vice President for Institutional Equity invites us who are involved everyday in undergraduate education to contribute to the annual update to the Kentucky Council for Postsecondary Education (CPE) on the 2011-2015_UK_Diversity_Plan.

- last year’s annual report to CPE co-edited by Dr. Judy “JJ” Jackson and submitted by Terry Allen.
This report is specific to the CPE’s data template and so is different from — though certainly reliant on — the annual reports that are submitted to the Office for Institutional Diversity or the UK Affirmative Action Plan overseen by the Office of Institutional Equity and Equal Opportunity.
The part of the annual report to CPE that we’ve been asked to update is about “closing the achievement gap” with some descriptions of the work done in academic and co-curricular support units to accompany the quantitative data regarding retention and graduation rates. In the narrative we want to highlight your activities in the last academic year, 2012-13 — and we’re particularly interested in comparing the impact of those activities to our baseline year 2010-11. What we’d like to hear from you is any strategies, successes, pilot initiatives that your unit conducted last year that you feel impacted progress made in retention, successful transfer or persistence, and timely graduation for a particular racial/ethnic group identified in the plan. (Others are addressing diversity in UK’s student enrollment, the workforce and in campus climate.) For example, you notice that there is a greater diversity in your unit’s group of student leaders — or that you are working in new and innovative ways to increase the diversity of your students overall. This work offers a strongly positive aspect for student academic challenge, and thus your work is an important part in retaining/graduating students of color, women in the sciences, or other kinds of key demographic characteristics of your students who might otherwise (without being members of this kind of organization) not have the kinds of experiences that keep undergraduates engaged in college life.
When you observe that groups are excluded in those co-curricular activities that you know impact retention/persistence/graduation and you are beginning to have discussions to address the problem, this is also important information to share. There is room in the report for a discussion of special areas/groups that the institution serves that may or may not be included in the diversity plan: adult undergraduate students, international students, LGBT, socio-economic, veterans, etc.
We’re not asking for much – a paragraph, or even just a sentence or two can help provide some guidance as to what you feel we must emphasize in a narrative justification for our gains and losses among those who represent our historically most underserved groups. If you have detailed information that is of some length (e.g. a whitepaper or media presentation you’ve uploaded to the UKnowledge.uky.edu repository), we can reference those sources.
