Summer Advising Conferences 2013 – A Terrific Job By Representatives of UK Programs and Services

In a recent message from Don Witt, Associate Provost for Enrollment Management and University Registrar, we learned that this summer’s Advising Conferences sessions pulled in nearly 95% of admitted students who had confirmed they wanted to come to UK this fall. Students and their parents/friends came from across the Commonwealth, 43 states, the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. and beyond. Starting Monday, June 17th and continuing through Friday, July 12th, Enrollment Management — in partnership with representatives from all the undergraduate colleges and myriad programs and student support services — conducted twelve freshman, three transfer and two readmission conferences.

This all started in the fall of 2012 with a full-blown effort by everyone with the 2012 Preview Nights.  Beginning on Monday, August 27 in St. Louis, MO,  representatives from Enrollment Management along with faculty, staff, and students from each of UK’s colleges traveled to 21 cities for the 2013 recruitment cycle. 12 of the cities were in Kentucky, but the out of state recruitment events also occurred in Dayton, Columbus, Nashville, Atlanta, Chicago Indianapolis, Fairfax and Cleveland.

Then in two weekends in March 2013, Enrollment Management hosted Merit Weekends with a record of over 900 of UK’s top admitted students from nearly 30 states. By invitation only, students had the opportunity to meet with individual advisors and register for the fall semester – as well as learn more about extracurricular activities at UK and interact with current UK students. Here’s a special video message from Dr. Capilouto to the 2013 Merit Weekend attendees:

There are three more advising conferences in late August (International Students, Freshman/Transfer Students, and Readmission/Non-Degree Students) and a late registration window (August 28-September 4), and by September 18th we will get a preliminary view of what our newly admitted graduation cohort looks like. In the meantime, as Don Witt put it, the collaborative spirit and support of UK’s academic and student affairs units contributed to this successful 2013 admissions cycle. Congratulations to all!
