As we prepare to celebrate #blueabroad week at UK (Jan 28-Feb 1), the Office of First Generation Initiatives has partnered with Education Abroad, International Studies Abroad, and the UK Department of Communication to sponsored an education abroad program in London, England. “First Adventures in a Global Marketplace” is a program designed specifically for first generation students during the first summer session of 2013. The program is from May 14 – June 5, 2013. Participants will enroll in COM 390: Global Workplace Communication which will provide students with the fundamental principles and practical skill-sets to understand the diverse cultures that comprise the global marketplace of the 21st century. Through visits and discussions with London business leaders, participants will observe first-hand how multinational corporations navigate the intense diversity challenges of today’s independent business community. Using London as a classroom, students will engage with one another and the local community through class projects.
Nine percent of UK students that study abroad are first generation. Director of First Generation Initiatives Matthew Deffendall will lead this program and teach the course in London. Additional scholarship dollars have been secured to support first generation students who apply for this program. Thirty UK students will be selected to participate in the first year of this partnership. Students will be housed in the Nido Student Living, a modern residence hall in the heart of London. The program cost includes housing, transportation card for public transit in London, and admission to the excursions. In addition to the connected course, participants will visit Stonehenge, Bath, and Cambridge, as well as take a double-decker bus tour of the city, cruise on the river Thames, enjoy a matinee theatre show, guided tour of the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, British Museum, and transportation to and from London’s Heathrow Airport.
Students will be in class on Tuesdays and Thursdays and visit businesses on Monday and Wednesday. Some of the business partnerships secured include a tour of the AllTech facility in Stamford, Lincolnshire, and a tour of a horse farm in Newmarket. Other business visits are still being secured but include a broadcasting company, local sports team, and manufacturing facility.
This program is ideal for students from all majors as the course will include aspects of business, political science, and interpersonal communication. The deadline to apply is February 27th and students will be selected on a first come, first serve basis. If you have questions, please visit our booth at the Education Abroad Fair on Wednesday, January 30th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.
